Certified Professional Midwife
Merrily Daly, RN CPM
I have been practicing midwifery for over 30 years, mostly in the state of Hawaii, on the island of Maui. I have been a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) since 1995 through NARM (North American Registry of Midwifes). During 1994-1996 and 2007-2008 I was president of the Midwives Alliance of Hawaii. I have been part of over 3,000 births & love what I do!
My Philosophy
I follow the Midwifery Model of Care and believe in educating families to make the best decision for their birth whether it be at home or in the hospital.
Empowerment through education decreases fear and enables you to relax and feel confident that you're capable of delivering your baby. Only you know what is best for you, and my goal is to offer all the information needed to make an objective, personal decision.
I believe in women and their innate ability to give birth. I also believe in midwifery and the unique personalized care it offers. My purpose is to keep your pregnancy within a normal range through education, diet, exercise, good communication, mental clarity and deep relaxation. I listen to my clients and offer support with a team that cares about you and your family. I'm available to address all questions or concerns throughout pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
My Story
I fell in love with midwifery in 1983 after witnessing the home birth of my niece. At that time, a group of doctors and one midwife were in the process of taking on a group of 8 students to train in midwifery, since the tradition had almost been lost forever. I was fortunate enough to be part of this training. Over the course of two years we traveled to rural areas in Northern California to deliver babies at home. An obstetrician and a pediatrician were present at every home delivery in those days. After studying and being involved with birth for 2 years, I was on my way to becoming a primary midwife.
I'm proud to have been involved with over 3,000 home births. It has been an incredible calling in my life, to say the least. I've traveled to distant countries and many foreigners have come to Maui to give birth in my care. I have lived in the Hawaiian Islands since 1976 and have resided on Maui since 1984. I'm passionate about my life's work, and feel it's such a huge part of my spirit and nature. I love what I do and know that I'll be happily practicing midwifery into the forseeable future.
My Assistant, Jan Ferguson
Jan has attended hundreds of births on Maui over the past 32 years. Her path to midwifery began with the home births of her own children and concurrent 6 year educational apprenticeship with the same midwife who delivered her children, Sunny Supplee.
In 1995 she was part of the first group of midwives in the U.S. to become a Certified Professional Midwife through The North American Registry of Midwives (NARM).
Jan and I have worked together for over 25 years. She has valuable insight and together we provide highly skilled, and nurturing support for the families we serve.
In addition to assisting at out of hospital births, Jan offers doula care, labor support, and patient advocacy at the hospital.
Past professional experiences include prenatal yoga teacher and community childbirth instructor with Maui Childbirth Association and Maui Family Services.
She has a deep trust in the process of pregnancy and birth. Her role is to guide support and respect families through birth and the early postpartum period in whatever way is right for them.
"It is my honor to be with women and families in such a pivotal time in their lives. My hope is that their birth will be enhanced by the care and experience I offer." -Jan
