About Me

My Story

I started midwifery in 1973 after witnessing the birth of my niece at home. A group of doctors and a midwife were in the process of taking on 8 students to train in midwifery, since the art had almost been lost. It was in the 1970’s that midwifery was gaining recognition with the "hippies". I became one of the 8 who were trained over two years traveling into rural areas in Northern California delivering babies at home right from the get-go. Of course there was an Obstetrician and a Pediatrician at every home delivery in those days.

After studying and being involved with birth for 2 years, I was well on my way to being a primary midwife. I have been practicing since 1973 taking intermittent breaks from time to time. I have been involved with over 2,400 home births and it has been an incredible calling in my life. I have traveled to distant countries for birth, as well as many foreigners have come to Maui to give birth. I am passionate about my life's work and feel it is such a part of my spirit and nature and I'll probably do births into my old age.

At present I practice out of my home in Kihei and also have a secondary small clinic in Pukalani so that I can serve most of the island. I also have a birthing room in my home that is available when couples want a more neutral place to give birth. (Maybe they live in a condo and do not want to deliver there or they live to far away from the hospital and they want to be closer for their own safety). I have lived  in the Hawaiian Islands since 1976 and have resided on Maui since 1984.  I live alone with my dog  and cat, and I have a son, Scott, who is 41 and lives in California.

Merrily Daly, CPM

My name is Merrily Daly and I have been practicing midwifery since 1973, mostly in the state of Hawaii on the island of Maui. I am a Certified Professional Midwife since 1998 through NARM (North American Registry of Midwifes). I held the office of president for the  Midwives Alliance of Hawaii in 1994-1996 and again in 2007-2008

My Philosophy

I follow the Midwifery Model of Care and believe through educating women and couples, they empower themselves to make the best decision for their birth whether it be at home or in the hospital.

Empowerment through education decreases fear and enables you to relax with affirmation knowing you are capable of delivering your baby into this world. Only you know what is best for you, yet you can only know that if you have all the information to make an objective decision which is paramount when it comes to birth.

I believe in women and their innate ability to give birth, when they are left alone without pressure and intimidation from the medical community. I feel birth has gotten so far away from being natural anymore…..with all the testing, ultrasounds, amniocentesis, along with in utero photography and epidurals. Not to say that certain tests aren’t important, they are for those few that really need them. However all pregnant women are now lumped into a category where they are all tested whether it is needed or not.  Women are no longer looked at as an individual when going to the doctor and many times women leave the office feeling disappointed. I am able to console them and help them understand why it is that way, then show them a way through midwifery care to receive more personalized attention with a team that cares about you and your family giving you the information to use as you see fit.
